Only the Gurung tribe risk their lives to acquire this honey though, the increasing global demand is having a harmful effect on the process and the tribe too

What is Hallucinogenic Honey?

This honey is prepared only one month in a year by the great Himalayan Cliff Bee. The Bee is is 3 cm long and the honey is red, unlike the standard golden tinted honey. It tastes a little bitter than the usual sweet honey and  consists of grayanotoxins which cause psychoactive effects.

If this honey is consumed in large amounts, it can have worse effects than hallucinations. There are some cases of “mad honey” causing death due to a heavy dose of it. However, it is still wanted throughout the world as it also possesses medicinal qualities.

Demand?

The quest for this honey is very difficult as the Gurung Tribe members put their lives on the line to scale immense heights and also getting stung by these great bees before they come out. The seekers pay a heavy sum to get this unusual honey.

Furthermore, this crazy demand has led to hunting offseason as well, which is seriously damaging the ecosystem. If this continues, there will no more Mad honey to crave and the Gurung Tribe will lose their job.
