Words We Need to Exclude From Our Vocabulary

2020 has been a year of change and the voice against discriminatory behavior has been raised and amplified on social media. With people becoming aware and acknowledging their biased behavior towards certain communities and groups, it is an individual responsibility to correct ourselves. There are many words that are casually used and thrown around which are not only offensive but derogatory in nature. It is important to unlearn it and remove such words from our vocabulary. Here are some insulting, racist, and degrading words that we need to stop using.

Ghetto

Refers to a part of any city inhabited by minorities of the society.

Colored Skin People

Used to refer to people who don't have a 'conventional' skin tone.

Fat Girl/Boy

Used in a sense to fat shame a person and make him/her feel bad about their bodies.

Chinky

Used to refer to the North-Eastern community in a stereotypical way.

Skinny Girl/Boy

Used to refer to people in a way that makes them feel bad about being leaner than people 'deem' normal.

Kaala (Dark -Skinned person)

A Hindi word used to address people who have dark skin.

Anti-feminist

A word used to disregard the efforts of feminist movements that took place to give women their rights.

Sixer

A word used to refer to transgender people in a derogatory way.

Retarded

A synonym for a foolish or stupid person.

These are some words that we shouldn't use in our day to day conversations. Educate yourself and people around you to make the world a safer space for everyone.
