Trooping the Colour: Sikh Soldier makes history

Many gathered in London to see the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony  performed by regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies on June 9th to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday. Mainly people gathered to see the newlywed Duke and Duchess of Sussex making their debut as a couple during the pageantry but there was something else that created history. For the first time ever, a Sikh Coldstream Guard soldier took part in the parade wearing a turban instead of a bearskin hat that is traditionally worn by the troops. Charanpreet Singh Lall, a 22-year-old man from Leicester made it possible. He said “I hope that more people like me, not just Sikhs but from other religions and different backgrounds, would be encouraged to join the Army". Lall’s black turban carried a ceremonial cap star to match the bearskin hats of other soldiers. Photos of the young Guardsman went viral on social media with people expressing their happiness for him.
