UAE’s Gender Equality Awards Trolled on Social Media

Jan 30, 2019

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have been ridiculed after no women were given awards at an initiative designed to foster gender equality in the workplace. The vice-president of the United Arab Emirates Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum gave certificates and medals in the categories of “best government entity supporting gender balance”, “best federal authority supporting gender balance” and “best gender balance initiative”. The awards went to the finance ministry, the federal competitiveness and statistics authority and ministry of human resources respectively, which were all represented by male awardees.

A tweet celebrating the awards didn't go down well with people as they were surprised that no woman was judged worthy of getting an award for gender equality.

People on social media mocked and trolled the UAE government for the awards.
