Common Superstitions and the Truth Behind Them

Our parents often keep us from doing things on certain days, simply because it is a commonly believed superstition. Some of them are outright bizarre and don't make sense while others came in place, a long time ago, for a reason. Here are some common superstitions that you must have heard of  but the actual truth behind them will shock you.

Broken mirror brings 7 years of bad luck.

Romas came up with a story that tells if a person sees himself in a mirror and he/she is unwell then the mirror would break. The would  take 7 years to renew itself. This story was told because mirrors were expensive back then.

Not cutting or trimming nails in the dark

This was told by people who lived in the times when not everyone had the luxury of night lamps and lights. Nails were not advised to be cut in the dark to avoid injuries.

Not going for haircuts on Tuesdays

Tuesdays used to be a holiday for barbers in the old days so people could not go for haircuts on this day of the week. Even after the day of rest changed for them, this superstition followed.

Hanging chilies and lemon to ward off evil

It is believed that chilies and lemon will keep the goddess of misfortune away when in reality the combination acts as an effective pesticide.

Throwing coins in the river

Earlier, the coins were made from copper, and drinking water was taken straight from the rivers. Copper is known to have health benefits and it also used to kill bacteria in the flowing river water.

Feeding food to the crows meaning feeding it to our ancestors

According to Hindu mythology, the son of God Indra, Jayant, hurt Sita who is the wife of Lord Ram and Jayant was disguised as a crow. Lord Ram parted his eye and Jayant apologized later. Lord Raam forgave him and blessed him by saying that now whoever will offer food to crow it will reach to their ancestors.

Taking a bath after funeral

It is believed that taking a bath after attending a funeral will ward off evil spirits but people back then used to do it to get rid of any germs and bacteria that they may have caught.
